Mission

The Tertiary and Post Secondary Education Service Unit is committed to providing opportunities to all Belizeans to have access to quality tertiary and post secondary education that will inform, reform and transform individuals into mature and responsible citizens.

Vision

Organizational Position

The Tertiary and Post Secondary Education Services (TPSES), also known as the Tertiary Unit, is one of the service areas under the portfolio of the Deputy Chief Education Officer with responsibilities for service areas.

Scholarships

The Government of Belize offers some scholarships directly through the Ministry of Education. Other scholarships may be offered through agreements with other countries through the Ministry or through other ministries.

Financial Assistance

The Tertiary Unit also manages other financial assistance given as one-time grants or to be disbursed in installments.

Such financial assistance is paid directly to the academic institution on behalf of the student.

Financial assistance is also given directly to students in the form of stipend at international universities.

TERTIARY SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS AND PROGRAMMES WITH DETAILS

CSEC TUITION MERIT AWARD

Recipients of the CSEC Tuition Award

Beginning with the 2015 CSEC examinations, students who earn Grades I-III in six (6) or more CSEC subjects at the General/Technical Proficiency Level (i.e. English A and Mathematics plus 4 other subjects) in one sitting qualify for a 2 year tuition scholarship at the Associate level at any of the junior colleges (JCs) in the six districts or at the University of Belize (UB). Students who earn Grades I-III in six (6) CSEC Subjects, including English A and Mathematics and who will be pursuing Associate Degrees in Primary Education or Associate Degrees in Early Childhood Education will be awarded full scholarships (i.e. tuition, fees and books).

Accessing the Tuition Award (Junior College)

 Students need to present the CSEC slip or certificate to the office of the registrar or finance officer at the JC which they attend.

Accessing the Tuition Award (UB)

Students fill out an application form. Application forms are available from the Tertiary Unit in Belmopan, District Education Centres and on the website at www.moe.gov.bz.

Students submit the CSEC certificate along with the completed form, letter of acceptance from UB, a copy of the passport data page or birth certificate or nationality certificate to the Tertiary Unit, Ministry of Education, Belmopan.

An official letter is prepared and sent to UB and to the student.

SECOND YEAR TUITION PROGRAMME

This is provided to all second year students when they pass into the second year with a 2.0 GPA. Those who earn a 2.5GPA in Semester I receive the tuition waiver again in Semester II.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES

Belize/Cuba Scholarship Programme – Ministry of Education

The Government of the Republic of Cuba and The Government of Belize offer scholarships in Medicine to 8 Belizean students.

Applicants:

◦ Must have completed 6th form

◦ Must be between the ages of 18 – 25 yrs of age

◦ Must be a Belizean Citizen

◦ The Medical Scholarships are advertised in April/May each year. The applicant must hand deliver all relevant documentation along with application form to the Ministry of Education by the deadline and then attend an interview. If selected the student is required to participate in a one day orientation session organized by the stakeholders. Classes begin in early September.

Belize/Mexico Scholarship Programme – Embassy of Mexico

The Government of the United States of Mexico offers 20 scholarships to Belize each year. The scholarships are advertised in March and are tenable at approximately 32 different universities all over Mexico which offer a wide range of subject areas. These scholarships include Bachelor and Masters level studies. For further information please contact the Embassy of Mexico, in Belize.

Professional and Technical Scholarship Programme – Ministry of Education

Each year the Government of Belize offers, through the Ministry of Education, scholarships to the University of the West Indies or other Commonwealth Caribbean Universities.

Officially named the Professional and Technical Scholarship, commonly known as the "Prof &Tech", these scholarships are advertised yearly for a Bachelors Degree to be completed within 3 yrs.

The Scholarship Call is open for 3 weeks (in late May, early June). Application forms with can be picked up from the main office of the Ministry of Education in Belmopan or the Education Centre in each district.

*Areas of study are listed in the scholarship Call.

*Applicants must have an acceptance letter from UWI or have at least applied to access this scholarship.

Belize Open Scholarship – Ministry of Education

This scholarship is awarded yearly to the recipient of the highest CAPE Scores in the country of Belize.

The award is made as provided under the BELIZE SCHOLARSHIP REGULATIONS, (Section 6) Chapter 34 of the Revised Edition of the Laws, 2003. The scholarship is tenable at the University of the West Indies.

*Studies may be completed at Commonwealth universities upon approval of programme and university by the Ministry of Education.

*Forms are available from the junior college of attendance and must be submitted through the Dean.

Santa Clara Scholarship – Ministry of Education

This scholarship is offered jointly by the University of Santa Clara and the Government of Belize. It is offered on a 3-year schedule i.e. after the current recipient graduates then another recipient starts.

Applicants:

The scholarship is for a Bachelor's Degree in any of the programmes listed in the Scholarship Call.

*The scholarship itself is for 5 semesters, the duration of time to complete the Bachelors Degree.

Commonwealth Fellowship Scholarship – Ministry of Public Service

The Commonwealth Secretariat offers Belize one yearly scholarship for Post graduate studies in the UK.

This scholarship usually becomes available toward the end of the school year for the next academic year.

It is open to all subject areas, with preference being given to programmes in line with the National Priority List.

*Applicants must have acceptance letter from the University of Choice in the United Kingdom.

Belize/Taiwan Scholarship Programme – Taiwan Embassy/Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The scholarships are offered through the Taiwanese Embassy.

OAS Scholarships – Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Organization of American States, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, offers scholarships at the Bachelors and Masters Level to deserving Belizeans.

Preference is usually given to subject areas in line with the National Priority List.
Eligibility criteria include Belizean Citizenship, a competitive grade point average and a mature, professional presentation during the interview.

These scholarships are usually advertised toward the end of the calendar year, around December, for the next academic year.

*Applicants must have acceptance letter from a university in the United State of America or Canada.

Many other scholarship calls are placed throughout the year on the website for the Ministry of Education.

CONALEP Scholarship Programme - Ministry of Education

The National College of Professional Technical Education (CONALEP) of Mexico under the Department of International Studies and Academic Exchange and the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports of Belize offers scholarships yearly to Belizean Nationals to study at the Professional & Technical Bachiller Level in Mexico.

The CONALEP Scholarship Call is opened in March and studies commence in August. The programme is for 3 yrs.

Students need to have completed at least the first two years of high school.

*A Bachiller is not to be confused with a Bachelors's Degree.
